How does alternate side parking work in NYC?

I’ve seen that on street cleaning days in my neighborhood, people park their cars next to other cars on the opposite side of the street, blocking them in, and then move them back after the cleaning is done. What are the rules about this?

Every street is different. Go out a bit early and watch what others are doing. Sometimes the street sweeper might not come at all. Or it might make you go around the block, risking losing your spot. You could pull over and then back in. Just remember, the only rule is you have to move for the sweeper. Once you leave, someone else can take your spot.

There are signs that say when you cannot park there. For example Tuesday 8am to 10am. So just don’t park there at that time.

Sometimes you can’t park until the end time on the street cleaning signs, even if they have already been by.

Alternate Side Parking (ASP) in New York City helps keep streets clean. Here’s how it works:

  • Look for signs with a “P” crossed by a broom. These signs tell you the days and times when you can’t park.
  • On those days, you must move your car from the side of the street being cleaned.
