I’ve been using yEd Graph Editor for my diagramming needs, and while it’s a powerful tool for creating diagrams, I think it might be time to explore some alternatives. I love that it can quickly create flow charts and UML diagrams, but I’m curious if there are better options out there. What have you all found useful?
You should definitely check out draw.io. It’s free and super easy to use for making all kinds of diagrams.
Dia is another good option. It’s open source and works well for basic diagrams too.
How does it compare to yEd in terms of features? Is it as powerful?
It’s not as feature-rich as yEd, but it’s still pretty solid for simpler tasks. Good for basic needs.
LibreOffice Draw is also a nice alternative. If you’re already in the LibreOffice ecosystem, it’s a natural fit.
Is it user-friendly? I’ve used Writer but never tried Draw.
Definitely. It has a similar interface to the other LibreOffice tools, so it’s easy to pick up.
You might want to consider Freeplane too. It’s a great mind mapping tool that can also handle diagrams pretty well.
How does Freeplane work for diagramming? Is it strictly for mind maps?
It’s primarily for mind mapping, but you can create diagrams from the maps you make. It’s pretty flexible.
Lucidchart is also a popular choice. It’s web-based and has a lot of templates that make it easy to start.
Is there a free version, or is it all paid?
It does have a free version, but some features are limited unless you go for the paid plan.
