I’ve been using MobaLiveCD to run Linux LiveCDs on my Windows machine, but I’m curious if there are any other (maybe better) alternatives out there? I’m looking for something free and open-source ideally. Any recommendations?
VirtualBox is hands down one of the best options. It’s free, open-source, and supports a ton of platforms. Plus, it’s pretty easy to use if you’re just getting started with virtualization.
Yeah, I’ve heard of VirtualBox. Does it support running LiveCDs like MobaLiveCD?
Definitely! You can run LiveCDs with VirtualBox no problem. It’s a great all-rounder for virtualization tasks.
I’d also recommend VMware Workstation Player. It’s free for personal use and works great for running Linux on Windows. I use it for testing different distros.
Sounds good! How does VMware Workstation Player compare to VirtualBox?
Both are solid, but VMware can be a bit faster in some cases. VirtualBox is more customizable though. Depends on what you need.
If you’re on macOS, Parallels Desktop is worth a look. It’s not free, but it runs Windows and Linux pretty seamlessly. Great if you’re doing more than just testing.
I’m mostly on Windows, but I’ll keep that in mind if I switch to macOS. Thanks!
UTM is another option if you’re looking for something on macOS or even iOS. It’s open-source and runs pretty smoothly.
Cool, I hadn’t heard of UTM before. Is it similar to VirtualBox?
Yeah, it’s somewhat similar but more focused on macOS/iOS environments. Still solid for running different operating systems.
For a quick setup, VMware Workstation Pro is pretty slick. It’s not free, but it’s packed with features for managing virtual machines.
Thanks! I’m looking for free options for now, but I’ll keep VMware Pro in mind if I ever need something more advanced.
